We are pleased to announce that we’ve added The Madisonian from Virginia City, Montana, to our archives. The Madisonian is Montana’s oldest weekly newspaper and has been published continuously since 1873. In addition to The Madisonian, we’ve added 291 new Montana papers in the last month. You can see a list of those new titles below.

The Madisonian: December 17, 1903

In 1863, six trail-weary men camped beside a mountain stream. As they prepared dinner, they began prospecting a piece of exposed bedrock in an area now known as Alder Gulch. They soon uncovered one of the richest deposits of placer gold in North America. People flocked to the site, and Virginia City was born.

The lure of gold brought Tom Deyarmon, a printer, to Alder Gulch. He arrived in the summer of 1863. He was a prospector and merchant, ran for sheriff, and later decided to start a paper. He launched The Madisonian intending to be “Democratic in politics but conservative in all things pertaining to the general welfare of the country.”

This fall, The Madisonian is celebrating its 150th anniversary. This paper offers a rich resource for the history of this area and the people who have called Virginia City home. From the mining boom to the population decline when prospectors moved on, The Madisonian recorded the news as it happened.

In the 1940s, Charles and Sue Bovey began efforts to save abandoned buildings and artifacts in Virginia City. Their efforts gave a second life to Virginia City and have turned it into a major tourist destination, offering visitors a glimpse of the Old West. 1. Sometimes new content depends what is available and IF the institution that holds the microfilm is willing to work with a site like Newspapers..com. I know in my state, Kentucky, most all newspapers on microfilm is controlled by the University of Kentucky, who have stated that not only will they not digitize their microfilm collection (over 60,000 rolls) but will NOT work with third party companies like Newspapers.com. So, there is very little hope for much new content in Kentucky since they control most of what still exists.

  1. Though I DID see the name of the paper on the list of updates but it doesn’t say new though I sworn it was new never seeing it before and it looks like I was right!

  2. I was hoping for the San Diego Union-Tribune (1992-Current), San Diego Union (1868-1992), San Diego Evening Tribune (1895-1992), San Diego Tribune(1989-1992), The Tribune (San Diego,CA)(1981-1989) and also add the Oceanside Blade Tribune (1960-1989)-(Oceanside, California), “La Jolla Light & Journal” merger from 1913 through present, San Diego Daily Transcript from San Diego, California (1882-2015), The Daily Californian/El Cajon Californian from El Cajon, California (1967-1999), Del Mar Surfcomber from Del Mar, California (1958-1993), and other San Diego County newspapers(1923-Present) at any time until getting permission from the copyright holders!!

  3. Send me an email when you include the Charleston Gazette in Charleston, WV. You have the Sunday Gazette-Mail but it doesn’t go back far enough.

  4. When a search is performed, it would be helpful if the results were in chronological order.
